The Indian cricket team has encountered a significant setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed his withdrawal, citing an inability to regain full fitness in time for the tournament. The injury, sustained during the final Test against Australia last month, had already sidelined him from the ongoing ODI series against England.

In place of Bumrah, the BCCI has selected young fast bowler Harshit Rana for India's Champions Trophy squad. “Jasprit Bumrah will miss the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to injury. The selection committee has named Harshit Rana as his replacement,” stated an official BCCI announcement. This marks a major change in the squad, with Rana now set to make his mark in a high-profile international tournament.

Bumrah’s absence is a major concern for India, as he has been one of the team’s most reliable bowlers in global tournaments. The pacer’s exclusion leaves a significant gap in the bowling attack as India seeks to reclaim the Champions Trophy title, last won in 2013.

The BCCI has also made an additional alteration to the squad, replacing young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal with mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Chakravarthy, who has been in impressive form in T20 internationals, is currently making his ODI debut in the ongoing series against England.

“Varun Chakravarthy has been included in the squad for the Champions Trophy. He will take the place of Yashasvi Jaiswal,” the BCCI’s statement added. Jaiswal, along with Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube, will serve as non-traveling reserves and could be called up if necessary.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence on February 19. India’s group stage matches will all take place in Dubai, while the remaining fixtures, including matches involving other teams, will be played in Pakistan.

India will open its campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23. The team will then face New Zealand on March 2. Should India progress to the semi-finals and final, those matches will also be hosted in Dubai.

The final 15-member squad includes: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, and Arshdeep Singh.
